make white portion of a photo transparent in Illustrator

a newbe question no doubt. But I'm flumoxed by the transparency/clipping paths/ clipping mask options and features. Could someone please tell me how to make the white portion of the clipart (wine drops) transparent so the background gradient color shows through here (see Illustrator file, attached). Thanks much!!

The easiest way is to set the blending mode of clipart (wine drops) to Multiply.
