missing color swatches in fill and stroke properties

Wnen I click on fill and stroke properties the color swatches are missing.  It has to do wth my project somehow because when I open up a new creation they are there!

Am I in some mode?

You probably work in a document that was not based on an Illustrator document profile. Could be that you opened an image or a pdf file. You can add default swatches from the Swatches panel menu.
