My effect tab goes grey when text is highlighted

For some reason I can acces my 3d effect when nothing is selected asoon as I highlight text it goes grey can anyone help I'm using a 2018 Mac book pro on the latest version of illustrator the first image is when nothing is selected second is when I'm trying to add effect my colour is set to rgb help me please and thank you .

Select the object with the selection tool, not the text with the text tool
