I've been struggling with this all day and I can't seem to figure it out, nor have I been able to find a similar issue anywhere on line.

I need to have my steps called out on my graphic. This is what it should look like:

  • Step Numbers are to be right aligned. (Using a Right Justified Tab)
  • All text is left aligned. (Using a Left Justified Tab)

However, when I go and make my step number longer, like "13.2."

  • My 13.2. is not lined up to my right tab.
  • My first line of text is not lined up to the left tab.
  • My second line is perfectly lined up.

The more digits I add to my step numbers, the more my alignment is off.

Currently, what I do is:

  1. Use my Type Tool to add my text object thing.
  2. Press tab (to go to the right tab) and type my number.
  3. Press tab again (to go to the left tab) and type out my text.
    • If I need an additional line of text, I'll do a soft return and hit tab twice, to get to the left tab.

Here's some additional info

Tabs:

  • Right: 0.25"
  • Left: 0.282"

Paragraph is Left Aligned

Font: Arial Narrow, 7pt

Leading: Auto

Kerning: Auto

Tracking: 0pt

Vertical: 100%

Horizontal: 100%

Baseline Shift: 0pt

Character Rotation: 0

All Indentions: 0pt

Help Please. Surely this can't be impossible to do.

Oh..and I don't want to split it up into two different text objects. The number and text have to be a certain length apart, doing that would make all the spacing different between everyone.

Thanks guys,

Tiff

Tabs in Illy is a PIA imho. Are you doing a lot of tab-text work? I'd recommend you do it in InDesign and export to pdf and place in Illy.
