Not able to make paths on new layer in Illustrator

Hello all 🙂 My professor recently gav eme a .ai (line)guide for the pen tool to redo and submit. However, i cant make paths on a new layer, without it autoselecting the origional .ai, and i have to chang ethe color EVERY SINGLE TIME i want to make a new path. Help!!

In the Appearance Panel flyout, uncheck the line "New Art Has Basic Appearance".

To lock the origional object, Select the object by clicking on it with the selection tool,

press Ctrl(cmd) + 2
