Opening 1 .ai file and seeing two slightly different, but related .ai files instead of just one

I have a student who has attached one .ai file to an email for me to look at.
When I open that file in AI, two files open that appear to be linked (they look different upon opening, but have a similar layout and when I edit one of them, the other also changes, but not in the exact same way).

Anyone know what is causing this to happen? I have never seen it before.

I am using AI version 24.3--cannot upgrade any further on the computer that I own. Not sure which version the student is using.

I would attach the student file, but when I try to attach it to this post and change the file name to preserve the student's anonymity, I get the following message: "The attachment's student file.ai content type (application/postscript) does not match its file extension and has been removed."

So this is also strange and may be another clue as to what is going on?

Thanks

Have the student zip the file before submitting by email. Unzipped.ai files can get mangled by some mail systems.

Interestingly, it came in the same after the student zipped it.
I thinkthe pst below this is onto the issue:

That happens when Window > New Window was chosen and the file was saved.

That happens when Window > New Window was chosen and the file was saved.

It will open with multiple windows for the same file.

If you close other windows and save changes there will be only one when opened.
