Opening an ai 24.0.1 file in 23.1.1 and all art layers are merged into 1 layer

We are losing all of our separate layers when we open an AI 24.0.1 file in our older AI 23.1.1. Does anyone have this problem and other than updating AI (and all of the plug-ins we use) is there a workaround for this? Thanks for any help!
