I have the most current version of Illustrator at home but my school uses Illustrator 2018. Can I open it regularly or does it mess with my files

You can open your CC2018 files without a problem in CC2020.

Unless you use the new Large format artboards and the vertical text alignment options, or freeform gradients, you can save your files as Version > Illustrator CC Legacy and open them in CC 2018.

If you are not sure, save a copy as a legacy CC file.
