Opening old illustrator files

I have really old iullsutrator files I was hoping to take a look at (illustrator 88).  Is there any hope?

Yes, make sure they have the .ai extension or open them from the Illustrator File > Open dialog.

Thanks, I may be working with a currupted file but none of the ideas presented so far seem to work.  I know there are soem 3rd party apps that may help, any insights to those?

Try opening them in Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Distiller. You could also try sharing the files here and seeing if anyone of us can open them.
