Problem dragging/placing .PNG files in Illustrator

When I drag and drop, or place a .PNG file into Illustrator somethiing really weird happens. It's like it loses all detail and color. I've added an image showing what I mean. The image on the L is a drag and dropped .PSD which looks perfect, the image on the R is what happens when I drop a .PNG. Please help!

Try if resaving the .png in Photoshop as Mode > 8 bits/Channel helps.
