"Save as" doesn't update file anymore

In my workflow, I have always opened old files, clicked "save as" and when I saved to the new name, it created a new file, and my working file was that new file.

However, now when I click "save as" it creates a new file but does not rename my current working file.

This has become a nightmare because I have been saving over old files with new files.

Is this a new feature or is something wrong with my Illustrator?

There are issues with certain antivirus applications. Please make sure there is nothing interfering.

There are also issues with servers. Generally in Illustrator. Does the same happen when you save locally?

Do you have sufficient privileges on the volume?

And also: please try and turn off "Save in background" in the Illustrator preferences.

I'm using a Mac and do not have any antivirus. The same happens no matter how I save (locally or to dropbox).

I'm using the Big Sur OS so not sure if that has anything to do with it

That worked! I turned off "save in background" and "export in background". What do these preferences do and what am I losing by turning them off? I never had them off before so I'm curious what changed

Those settings would allow you to keep working on this or other files while Illustrator saves your file.

With them turned off all you can do is hide Illustrator and do something completely different.

I did this and am still having problems. at least now it saves to the new folder, but the filename doesn't change to the active/last saved version. i have to close it and open the new one. or if i click on the PSD name to save out a JPG version, to adopt the name of it, it adopts the PSD now as well, whereas before just the actual file name text.
