Recover lost file - content visible in welcome screen but not when file is open

Is there a way to recover an AI file from a crash? When I open the file I only see the text "This is an Adobe Illustrator file that was saved without PDF content..." But all all of my work is still visible in the thumbnail on the welcome screen. Is the information is still around somwhere?

The data recovery folder is empty.

The thumbnail on Windows is a separate image which is embedded in the file. So if there is nothing in the file and there is also no PDF embedded in it, then there is nothing to recover.

There are third party recovery services available online, perhaps they are able to find something in the file. They are not free.
