Reverse turning a shape into a text box

I had a shape which I drew with the pen tool and had filled with a colour. I then accidentially managed to turn that shape into a text box and the fill colour has disappeared. How do I remove the text-fill function from this shape? The text-fill tools in the toolbar don't seem to have a remove option. If I select the shape and try to fill it with a colour nothing happens, so I assume that I need to remove the text-fill option first...
