Scaling in Illustrator

I have a vector illustration of a vintage engraving (lots of fine lines). When I scale it down it gets very black and loses the while space. Is there something I can do to keep the proportions and balance. (I have checked scale strokes in the scale dialog box).

Can we assume that you checked Scale Strokes and Effects before you scaled the illustration? Sometimes it's the little things…

Yes, scaling strokes and effects was checked.

Your screen has a limited ability of showing detail that may be reproduced in print.

Try the preferences setting Display Print Size at 100%.

View file at 100% and check if GPU or CPU view makes a difference (Cmd or Ctrl E to switch between them).
