Does it need to really go away or would a clipping mask be sufficient (which will just hide it)

In addition to what Monika said you can reapply the Stroke to the circle after clicking it with the Direct Selection Tool the get the (new) BMW look (Ungroup from the cross if they form a Group before applying the mask)

 

Edit: Or use a copy of the circle, as Hans-Jürgen said while I was still working on the above.
