I have an Adobe Illustrator file containing two concentric ellipses, one larger than the other and the area between them divided into three segments by three single lines.  Each one of these areas is labelled a, b or c.  How does one colour the area, a, yellow, the area, b, blue and the area, c, either white or transparent and then make each of these areas separate shapes that can be copied and either moved elsewhere in the file or copied into another file and then moved to a position of choic.

You can use Object > Live Paint for that and when done, Expand Live Paint to manipulate the result.
