Select tool only allows me to select objects if I click on the path

I want to select an object by clicking on the center of the object or the fill color, but I'm only able to select the object if I click on the path. What's going on?

In Preferences > Selection & Acnhor display check if Select objects by path only is ticked. And if so, untick.

Also this can happen with  clipping masks.
