Long time user of Illustrator and have recently learned Vectorworks. Vectorworks has this amazing feature that gives you a little view port zoom when you press Z. Super useful.

Here's my drawing area:

If I press Z it gives me this little view port:

You can imagine this is incredibly useful!

Is there something like that in Illustrator that I have negelected for years?

Illustrator does not have a feature like that.

You could open a second window (Window > New Window) for your design if you want to see a zoomed in part while you see the whole thing. But it's not the same and requires multiple steps to set up the new window, arange the windows, set the zoom levels, etc.
