Transparent logos and font disappear when saved as pdf and opened in a browser

My Illustrator project has 2 black squares over which I've placed 2 transparent logos and a chunk of transparent font all of which is placed over a jpeg. I'm looking for the font and logos to have a knockout effect all the way through the black square *and* the jpeg background so as to be totally transparent. When I save the file and open it up in Acrobat the logos and font show up (they're transparent/knocked out to the transparent background) but when opened in Chrome or Safari they're black i.e. no logo or text appears.

Am I overlooking something minor?

Acrobat can render everything in a PDF, other viewers can't and are therefore not reliable.
