trying to open files get unkown error?

when trying to open files that i just had open this morning i get error message saying an unknown error has occured

Which version, which system?

Are these AI files?

Where did you save them? Which options?

When did you last reboot the computer?

illustrator 22.1  operating system 10.14.6

yes ai files

 saved  in  folder on my desk top

restarted computer and illustrator after the error first come up and several times since

Is there a reason that you are not using the latest version?

Is a printer connected? Illustrator can get funky when there is no printer. Or the installed printer cannot be found. Or is turned off.

we have plug ins that does not work with  the newest version yet

Can you start with connecting a printer?

Set it up as the default printer and turn it on.

If you don't have one, set up a PDF printer.

ended up throwing away the preferences and back ot woking correctly now
