Trying to type into the Character Panel

I've had issues within illustrator where i would try to type into the character panel but the keys wouldnt register. I cant change the font number or even change the font itself if i try to type it in.  This has happened a few times, Ive had to close the program and reopen it in order to fix it. Is it a bug or is it a key short cut that I dont know about?

what version of Adobe Illustrator are you using? Does this problem only occur with one particular file or does it also occur with others?

If closing and opening the program fixes the issues you likely have a software conflict. Did you install any illustrator plug ins, additional OS items or any free fonts?
