So I click on the paintbrush tool, then click the properties tab, then under stroke, I increase to 20 pts, and then draw. But as soon as I finish drawing the line, the stroke box goes back to 1 pt.  It's even worse when I try to change brush types.  I go to the brush box, and click on basic, but it immediately reverts back to whatever I was using previously.

The basic reverting to last brush we all experience. Not sure why Adobe chose to do that as it confuses many. This video explains in detail.

After you finish drawing and your 20 goes to 1 pt is another issue. Don't use the properties palette, use the stroke palette instead.

Does it change if you disable the "New Art Has Basic Appearance" option in the flyout menu of the Apearance palette?

That seems to have done the trick.  I switched to the brushes window and the strokes palette.  I also used the garbage can for the annoying brush stroke style I couldn't seem to get rid of previously.  Thanks!
