Unable to make clipping mask?

Hi All,

Apologies if this is extremely basic -- I'm a beginner with illustrator. I'm trying to create a clipping mask with the barcode and the gradient behind it, such that the barcode is multicolored. When I select both items, and create clipping mask, the screen just goes white. 

My guess is that this is because all the lines in the barcode are separate objects (grouped together). However, if that is the case, then I don't know how to make it all into one object. 

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
