Unable to place linked TIFF files into document

Hello all,

Within the past couple of days I haven't been able to place linked TIFF files into any documents. These files can be large (from 100MB to 1.5GB) but it's never been an issue before. The same files can be placed into InDesign with no problem, but this vendor prefers Illustrator. I can also place other, smaller files (JPEGs for example) into the document with no problem.

Any guidance? I've done a search but didn't find an answer, apologies if it's been discussed before.

Relevant info:

iMac (Mojave OS)

Adobe Illustrator 2021

Error received: Illustrator could not read the file <NA<E>. Ttry replacing this with another valid link.

What options are you using to save the TIFF: Image Compression, Byte Order, Pixel Order (should be Interleaved), Layer Compression, etc.? Maybe there's a setting Illustrator isn't compatible with, but InDesign is.
