Using Mac running Catalina OS, with an old version of Illustrator in CS5. Just want to add drop shadow to some text and unable to do so. When opening the effects drop down, most of the selection choices are grayed out. Any suggestions?

Can you please provide screenshots in a straight and upright position? Thank you.

Please do also show the layers panel. Object selected and layer open.

Mac OS allows to set screenshots to PNG or JPG. That way you can embed them in your post instead of attaching.

I'm not sure Illustrator CS5 works on Catalina. CS5 is 10 yearsa old. Sometimes with such old software, parts of the application will work fine and others do not.

Please do a screenshot with the Layers panel as Monika suggested. But also include the Appearance panel and the selected object.
