Using grid, but need to have some lines that don't snap to it

I'm creating a custom font using the grid, but I can't figure out how I can go about creating some end points to my lines that don't snap to the grid - the gaps I need between positive shapes don't work out the way I'd like if all my lines snap to the grid.  What is the best solution to go about this problem? Thanks in adavance for any help.
