Vector image stays black after changing fill color or recoloring

Hi, I've been trying to change the color of my black vector image and when I hit the fill color, it stays black but says it's been changed to the color I selected. I've tried doing it through Recolor Artwork and also turning off the Black preserve box under the Custom color area but it still stays black. Please let me know what I'm doing wrong! You need to expand the Image Trace before you can recolor it.
