What does "one or more filled paths" mean?

I'd like to divide hair part from a face made by Ellipse Tool.

I draw a line for hair on a circle(face),

select both with Selection Tool,

and click [Pathfinder] - [Divde].

.

Then nothing happens, except an error that says "The filter produced no results. Please select one or more filled paths."

I tried other ways, like Scissors Tool, and checked pathfinder panel options.

But the problem was not solved.

Is it just a simple error?

So do I have to restart the Illustrator program and that's all?

I'm using Illustrator CC, Window 10.

ps. How can I upload the Illustrator file from my computer?

(Where's the button?)

It means that Pathfinder does not work on strokes. They must be filled paths. Expand first, then try Divide.

divide should work on stroked (or even unstroked) paths though.

Could you solve your problem?

What you showed from the book will only work when the paths are drawn really (really) cleanly.

BTW: it does not help at all when you show screenshots from other people's work. We need to see your artwork.

If you want to draw in this way, don't use pathfinders, live paint won't cause you this kind of trouble.

What you're describing should work. But as mentioned above, we really need to see a screenshot.

Try selecting the object and right click and select "create outlines". Then you should be able to use your pathfinder tool without the error
