What would be a similar tool in Illustrator for the Polygolnal Lasso Tool from Photoshop?

What would be a similar tool in Illustrator for the Polygolnal Lasso Tool from Photoshop?

I want to select a certain area and create a shape with the selected area. 

Right now I am drawing a bunch of squares and then putting them all together, but I would think there has to be a faster way to draw a shape.

I'm probably not understanding what you're asking for, but the pen tool does constrained straight lines and curves:
