When I open one of my files, it opens blank

I'm having an issue with one of my files on illustrator. So I was working on this file earlier today and it was running smooth, maybe a bit sluggish because it is a rather large file. I closed it, went out for a bit and then when I came home and opened the file again, it opens blank like the photo below. Layers panel or any panel for that matter is blank. Does anyone know what this is and how to fix it? I can open other files fine, it's just this one.

giving my computer a solid time out (shut down) seemed to have done the trick. But still curious if this is a common issue for anyone. Also reporting this so that if someone else is having the same problem, they can see what I did
