When Placing a PDF into illustrator paths appear.

I am trying to place a PDF into my artboard and when i hover over the lines it appears as paths and not justs the image itself. i wouldn't have a problem with it but i am because when i scale down the image the strokes get bigger and eventually are so big that they merge together. I just want to place my pdf without the editing features. i have had never had this problem before.

Is 'Link' unticked in the document browser window when you attempt to place?

Perhaps you are embedding PDFs when you intend to link them.
