Why can't I get normal layers (instead of sublayers) in illustrator?

The Thread Name applies to my question, but it is a littl different.

I hate sub layers, so I go to panel options, check "Show Layers Only" and "Top Level Only." Great! BUT when I open someone elses file and they have sub layers on, I have to go in and do this again. You might think "what's the big deal?" but when you have 30 production files that have to be set up in a week, this can be very frustrating.

Question: Can you Permanently turn off sub layers in Preferences or with a script?

Thank you in advance

You should probably create a new thread if you're asking how to do this with a script. Otherwise the people who could help you write a script, might not see your post.

To clarify, are you talking about

  • actual Sublayers
    or
  • objects on a layer?

As far as I know, no, you can't emulate the "Top Level Only" layer option with a script.
