Error when saving/checking in content

Here's my problem. I open the .icma file, which is stored on the server. It opens in InCopy just fine. I check out all content, make a few changes, then do "Save All Content." When I do this, I get an error saying "The following content could not be saved. The files could be locked or you may not have permission to change them." The file appears to save, but then I am unable to check in any of the content. I've restarted InCopy and my computer, and still have the same problem. Indeed, after restarting my computer and opening the .icma file, all the content was marked as check out—by me—with the line through the pencil icon. I am the only one working with these InCopy files; the designer does not have the corresponding InDesign file open.

Hey if your IT people confirm it was a server issue (and were able to fix it), I'd love to know! These kinds of probs are hard to diagnose but happen to various clients.

thx ...

What version of InCopy? What version of InDesign created it? Have you tried just opening the INDD file?

Always worth testing to see if you can open the INDD file and avoid the problem, as Bob says. Put the INDD file on the server and in InCopy, choose File > Open from within InCopy to make it open the INDD file. You can check stories in/out from there.

There is a saving-on-a-server bug happening with some ID/IC workflows that results in that message. Did anything new happen with InDesign or InCopy lately (update to a new version) or your computers (update the OS)?

First make sure that there isn't a problem with your rights/permissions on the server (check w/IT). The only thing that you're really editing are the ICML files (not the ICMA file, the assignment file) so look in that Content folder on the server where the ICML files are saved.

If your designer is running InDesign CC 2018.01, running this patch on it, then (I'm guessing) re-doing the assignment and stories might solve the problem. InDesign crashes while saving a file on a network drive

We are both running the latest CC version; we updated within the last couple of weeks.

It sounds like a server permissions issue. After the designer left last night and shut down their computer, I was able to check out, edit, check in the InCopy files just fine. We've also recently had problems moving folders around on our server when more than one person is connected. Guess I'll have to contact IT.

Thanks for your responses.

When you are asked for the version we need the EXACT version and build. I wish I had a dollar for every person that CLAIMED to be running the “latest” version but wasn’t.

Dang dude, don't have a conniption. I am running IC 13.1. But anyway, it sounds like this is a server issue and not related to the software. Thanks for your "help."

It's a sever permissions issue after all. InCopy works fine once the designer logs off the server, which is unfortunate because InCopy is, in theory, supposed to allow us to work concurrently on the same document.

However, our IT person wasn't able to fix the issue. They suggested taking the InCopy files off the server to work on them, then putting them back on the server when we're done. Haven't tried that option yet. I've just been asking the designer to log off while I'm working in InCopy.

That is not going to work. You could try doing it as a remote assignment workflow but if it’s server issue, then get your IT people to do their jobs.

Remote assignment are, quite frankly, a PITA.

Your IT person needs to be fired or laterally shifted to a new position, and someone who understands rights and permissions put in his/her place.

I have hundreds of clients running ID/IC files off of all types of servers, no issues. You cannot run the IC/ID workflow if you're copying files back and forth from a local hard drive to the server. So the IT person doesn't understand this extremely basic and fundamental point of the workflow, either.

Can you get off the server entirely and use Dropbox instead? Just use a shared subfolder of dropbox (locally, not off the website) with other members of your workgroup as though it was a mounted server.

Has the issue been resolved on your end? If yes, do you mind sharing how it's resolved? Thank you.
