InCopy crashing frequently

New Here ,
Jul 08, 2024 Jul 08, 2024

Nearly everyone in my company who works on a Mac has been having issues with InCopy crashing frequently. We've tried reverting to earlier versions, but that's resulted in very little improvement in performance—and earlier versions will not open INDD files in InCopy. I'm looking for ideas and help ASAP—our workflow has been seriously disrupted. Here's my setup, for reference:

InCopy 2024 (19.2 and 19.4) and 2023 (18.5.1)

Mac OS 14.5 (though I had the same problems when running 14.4.1)

Things that have made InCopy crash recently:

  • Checking out stories.
  • Checking in stories.
  • Pasting text into a note.
  • Typing in a note.
  • Replacing text in a note.
  • Changing from Layout to Story view.
  • Accepting all changes in a story.
  • Rejecting one change.
  • Dragging the tools window to the margin.
  • Typing too fast I guess.
  • In Story view, typing to replace text.

Holy moley that is definitely not normal.

What happens if you test the publication on a single machine. Install ID and IC (give yourself a different File > User name on each) on the same computer. Create a test layout with just a single text frame filled with some text. Save it to your computer. Export the story to InCopy format via the Edit > InCopy > Export Selection menu, save it to the same computer. Open the layout (the INDD file) in InCopy on your computer. Test some of the actions you listed. Still crashing?

If not, try doing the same with one of your publications. Crashing? Something in the file or fonts. Try rebuilding or export to IDML/open in same version of ID and save with new name.

Not crashing? Something in your network, most likely.

Whatever you're doing, don't use Assignments. Have the InCopy users open the layout from the shared server/folder.

Thank you so much, AnneMarie. I'm going to pass these suggestions on to our IT people and Design, and see if they/we can run some tests.

(Love your LinkedIn Learning course, by the way—pretty sure everyone on our team has used it.)

Hi @Satbir Singh Phul,

Sorry to hear that InCopy keeps crashing for you too. I know how frustrating that can be.

Could you please share the version of InCopy you're using and the details of your operating system? Also, it would be helpful if you could describe a bit more about what's happening. For example, does the app crash when performing specific actions like typing, switching views, etc.

When it crashes, please make sure to submit the crash report and include your email address in the submission. Once you've done that, feel free to DM me your email ID here on the community, and I'll take a look at the crash logs and update you.

Here's a link with more info on how to submit crash reports:

Looking forward to your reply!

Abhishek

Hi
InCopy just opens, that's it.
When I try to create a new file, or open one, InCopy closes, whenever I try to do anything.

Hi @Satbir Singh Phul,

Could you please confirm the exact version of InCopy you're using along with your operating system details? Also, I recommend using the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to completely remove InCopy from your system and then reinstall it fresh from the Creative Cloud app. Reference: https://adobe.ly/3FlrEoK

Please give this a try and let me know how it goes.

Looking forward to your update!

Abhishek
