InCopy shows A-Parent page instead of regular page in layout view

This is the first time our team has encountered this issue with InCopy. So far it is limited to just this document and we cannot find a solution. We have numerous other documents, all created the same way, and none of them have this problem. This specific document, when first opened in InCopy, is automatically viewed in "story mode" and looks fine. When switching to "Layout View" it shows the "A-Parent" page, which only has the header and is void of text. This creates a lot of confusion for everyone. What we would like to know is. How do we get it to stay defaulted to the regular pages with the text when switching to layout view? We just found the little selection tab in the bottom left corner but the majority of our end users are not tech savvy and would easily get confused by this. Is there a way to fix this?  We have no idea why it is doing this nor how to correct it.

We could use some screenshots and details as to which version of InDesign / InCopy is in use as well as the workflow but my general advice:

  • If it's just this file, have the InDesign user export to IDML and then bring that back in and work on that.
  • Avoid the very archaic packaging for InCopy feature
  • Do not use assignments. Open the INDD file directly in InDesign.

We are using:

  • InDesign version 19.0.1.
  • InCopy version 18.5.1. We found that we had random issues with the newer version (19) when accessing assignments on our server. This was with our whole team. Different issue different story and does not apply to this.

We do not "package" the files. Everything is saved on our server i.e. assignments, stories, artwork, etc.. Our experts access the assignments which allows them to edit/update the individual stories for that specific product.

We need it to work correctly in InCopy as that is what our technicians and experts use to update the documents in real time and with other groups across the country. So, giving these individuals a license for InDesign is out of the question.

Who said anything about giving them InDesign licenses?

InCopy and InDesign MUST be at the same version! Before you do anything else, the InCopy users should all be updated to InCopy 2024.

The default starting page is determined by how the document (INDD) was last saved in InDesign. If it was saved on the parent page that is what will be first displayed when you open it in InCopy.
