Adobe InDesign closing suddenly

New Here ,
May 03, 2025 May 03, 2025

I suffer from Adobe InDesign closing suddenly several times, whether when I use the writing features such as bolding the font or inserting text on the next page using the plus sign, or the page freezes and the program closes. Please fix this recurring problem, noting that I have contacted you several times.

Hello

This a user to user platform. And the information is a bit sparse to help you.

What's your system spec -  your OS version - and your InDesign version?

If you're on a Mac - are you running any other apps like WebRoot, Typeface, Magnet or VPNs or Firewalls?

Same question for Windows any VPNS, font managers, or other things running in the background.

Is it with 1 document or all documents?

For 1 document

If a document is not behaving well then try

File>Export

Choose IDML

Open the IDML in InDesign
Save the file as a new InDesign file with a new name
See if the issue persists.

--

If it's all documents

Try resetting your preferences:

InDesign 19.3 and newer go to Preferences > General > and click on "Reset Preferences on Quit" and then quit and restart.

Or
Windows: Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
macOS: While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.

If it persists

Reinstalling rarely fixes everything - you can do a complete reinstall using the

Hi @Tamadhr Alali,

I hope Eugene's suggestions helped in resolving the issue. If you're still experiencing crashes or freezing in InDesign, could you confirm if exporting to IDML or resetting preferences made any difference? Also, please share your InDesign version and OS details.

Just to clarify, when the issue occurs, is the application crashing entirely or just closing on its own? Do you see the Adobe crash reporter dialog box when it happens? If yes, please submit the crash report and make sure to include your email address when prompted. Once done, kindly share the same email address with me via DM on the community so I can check the logs with the team. Reference: https://adobe.ly/3GGd0cf

Additionally, please try testing the issue in Safe Mode and in a new local admin user profile to rule out any OS-level conflicts. Here are the steps to help:

For Windows Safe Mode:
https://adobe.ly/43enyId

For macOS Safe Mode:
https://adobe.ly/3GGd0sL

Creating a new user profile on macOS:
https://adobe.ly/4lS0QNo

Creating a new user profile on Windows:
https://adobe.ly/3GGd1wP

Please give this a try and let us know if the issue still persists.

Looking forward to your update!
Abhishek
