AI justified text

Community Beginner ,

Hi,

It would be very helpful if an AI could take over the fine-tuning for justified text. This means, for example, allowing the text to run slightly longer or minimally changing the font size to create an optically ideal justified layout.

Best,

The Adobe Paragraph Composer is considered to be AI because it "muses" many possible outcomes and then settles on one. But you have to awaken its power by editing your paragraph style.

Try this recipe on your justified Body copy:

Hyphenation: 9, 3,4, 1, 1p6, dot in center, off, off, off

... coupled together with ...

Justification:

Word 80/100/120

Letter -5%/0%/5%

Glyph 95/100/105

... and additionally I usually like Kerning Method set to Optical, but not every typeface font likes it. Also, many practitioners love to vigorously debate this, so I mention this last.

I've also often used the »Word 80/100/120 and Letter -5%/0%/5%« settings for justified text and have had good experiences with them. However, I do believe that it's time for technology to advance to a point where these adjustments don't have to be manually done by the user.

I believe that Photoshop has significantly outpaced InDesign in development through its AI tools and that InDesign holds tremendous potential for AI integration that could greatly enhance its capabilities.

Best,

Hi @SERIFA , That would assume there is a single Justification setting that is correct, but it’s really a design preference— you and AI might think it’s ok to allow a point size adjustment,  5% negative tracking, and 3 hyphens in row in order to get a justification you think looks good, but others could reasonably disagree.

To go further, I would also like to emphasize the fact that these settings also depend on the language. French, that have longer words than English request different settings, and I don't even mention German.

The AI could, for example, make a suggestion and you can then make adjustments. Just like in Photoshop, where there are also 3 suggestions from the AI after you have generated something.

But what‘s AI basing the suggestion on? Does it think mixing point sizes or allowing 3 hyphens in a row is a good idea? Where did it get that idea?
