Applying a style to text makes all the text disappear from the box

Using InDesign 17.2.1 on a Mac OS Monterey.

 

I applied an often-used text style to selected text. It caused all the text to disappear. The text did not reappear until I hit CMD+Z. I really do NOT want to have to apply all the options to recreate the style on individual blocks of text.

This, or any setting that makes the text and paragraph 'too large' for the box. A large left or top margin, for example. Start by dragging the box out much larger (down and right) to see if the tagged text reappears.
