Testing before a forthcoming projekt I get this problemn:

A placed mp3 file is seen as a loudspeaker in ID, it does play in the mediapanel and in the Epub test window

But:

In the pdf

1. The loudspeaker icon does not show, albeit the cursor change shape as expected when going over the area

2 I get a message at the top about Flash expired when trying to activate playing the sound clip.

I encloes three screen shots showing

a. The ID layout with Epub test window showing everything is OK, the mp3 plays

b. export settings in ID

c. the resulting pdf not showing the loudspeaker icon, mp3 does not play, yellow flash warning

What is the solution, what can I do to embed audio files in ID?

Thanks in advance

"You can definitely embed .mp3 sound files and .mp4 H.264-based video files without Flash as of this past Summer's Acrobat release."

The use of multimedia in a PDF is nothing but a crapshoot. Others may give you advice on workarounds and such but my advice, at least until PDF 2.0 is a viable choice, is to give this up right now. There are just too many hurdles.

Flash is dead and even if you can get around that, there's no way to control the reader app the recipient will use.

Dov is Adobe's, Chief Scientific Officer.

What it boils down to is, if you want a reliable way of playing audio on all devices in a document produced via InDesign, do not use PDF, use  HTML5 using formats such as FXL ePub, InDesign's Publish Online or the InDesign plug-in (at extra cost) in5. https://ajarproductions.com/pages/products/in5/
