Baseline shift value for objects?

Guide ,
Apr 23, 2025 Apr 23, 2025

Hello!

When changing the "baseline shift" of text, there is a value you can adjust up and down. It's only this way.

However, when putting an object (image etc.) into flow text, you can also shift the object up and down to adjust its position,  so it seems to also be kind of a baseline shift.

Nonetheless, this shift goes only by mouse and has no value. Being shifted, the object could even overlap a table cell edge.

Is there a (hidden) value somewhere, so I could sort of reset that shift to zero with?

If image is in a text flow then it's best to use anchored object and the settings, setting an object style works well and allows you to make global edits and tweaks in your layout.

Sometimes anchored objects can behave strangely - but they allow for interesting workflows, like if the object should always be in the margin - and if it changes from left page to right page the image can flow so it's always in the margin.

It really depends on your layout and what works for you.

Thanks, what you wrote contains the solution without mentioning it. The options for anchored objects have that value I was looking for, called "Inline Y offset".

@Doc Maik

Object placed in text can be:

1) InLined - behaves like a glyph / character,

2) Anchored - glyph / character in the text is an anchor and object itself can be anywhere on the same Spread.

Option 2) sounds weird to me. The image object is in flow text, because it's supposed to move with it. I cannot imagine, an anchored object does that.

Yes, it flows with text - but it can be in a set relative position to the text - for example on the margin - as a margin note - flowing with text so you don't have to move it from page to page when text shifts.

Or image can be always in the outside top corner of the spread, etc.

I wonder if this would be persistent through a process of creating an IDML for translation, open that IDML in a translation management software and later exporting it back as IDML, then open in ID to create an INDD...

It will - as long as translating software is set-up correctly - those properties for Anchoring - they are defined "outside" of the text contents - so will be ignored.

I mean, they are part of the text - but all the information is XML tagged and this tagging should be ignored by the translation software.

But you should make sure that the anchor point is outside of the words - before / after - not Anchored in the middle of the word.

Overall - it works the same way as when you add index marker or Footnote reference - they are ignored / preserved when text is translated.

All the options in the Anchored Object options have their place in various workflows.

There's no 'right' answer, it's up to the user to set them correctly. Anchored Objects use the XY axis, not baseline shifts, even if the result is similar, the language describing the action is different.

Anyway, you can play about with the anchored objects and find how to use them best for yourself.

I've used them when a laying out text with images in the margin, the Anchored Object can be set to be relative to the spine, which means that the object can shift from left margin on the left page to right margin on the right page when text reflows.
