BUG: Define Character Style Does Not Work in v 18.5

Explorer ,
Aug 03, 2023 Aug 03, 2023

New updated version of Adobe does not define a character style when highlighting text and clicking "Create New Style". It creates an entirely blank style and then you must manually type in your defining features in the properties pop-up...... This completely eliminates the entire need for this function.... I updated last night from v 17 and woke up this morning with a dysfunctional InDesign. PLEASE FIX.

Try resetting your preferences:

Windows: Start InDesign, and then press Shift+Ctrl+Alt. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
macOS: While pressing Shift+Option+Command+Control, start InDesign. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete preference files.
A dialog will appear asking to delete the InDesign Preferences, select 'Yes' on this dialog.

What did you change relatively to the paragraph style? Only changes made in the text, manualy overrides, are saved in a new character style. All other fields with no changes remain empty.

Hi @default74qhe656vn8y ,

I cannot see this behavior with my fresh updated InDesign 2023 to version 18.5.0.57 on macOS.

Only the overrides of my text selection are added to the character style. In my example the color and the capitalisation.

From my German InDesign:

DefineCharacterStyle-18.5.0.57.png

Look into my attached InDesign document and try to add new character styles for the word STYLE.

If that is working for you something's wrong perhaps with your document.

Export it to IDML and open it as InDesign document and try again. And please, attach a sample InDesign document to your next reply where you see the issue. Please show with a screenshot the text selection you did for creating a new character style.

Regards,
Uwe Laubender
