Bulk relinking of photos

Contributor ,

I am working on a macbook air with OS15.6, and Adobe InDesign 20.5 creative cloud.

I made a book in ID a few years ago which has hundreds of photos. The files (ID and photos) were on a backup disk but I have since transferred all those to a new disk with a new name. Because of the new disk name, when I open the ID file, it doesn't find any of the photos and they all need to be relinked. The photos are all in the same folder structure as before. The only thing that has changed is the name of the harddrive disk they are held on.

Is there a way to do a bulk relink of all these photos so I don't need to go one by one for hundreds of images?

Turns out 'Search for Missing Links in This Folder' only works when all images are in the same folder. For nested folders, I found an ID script that allows bulks relinks.

Hi @mpkadobe,

Thanks for sharing the details. Since the folder structure remains the same and only the disk name has changed, you can relink all the missing images in one go. In the Links panel, select one missing image and use the 'Relink' option. When the dialog box opens, navigate to the new folder location on your renamed drive and check 'Search for Missing Links in This Folder'. InDesign will automatically relink all the other missing files that share the same relative paths.

Give that a try and let me know if it works or if the issue persists.

Thank you for the tips Abhishek.  My book was made with six different ID files all linked as an ID Book.  Will the bulk relink work on all files linked in the book or will I need to go file by file?

All my photos are in folders that were arranged thematically, so there are folders nested in other folders. Three or four layers deep. Unfortunately, in order to use the  'Search for Missing Links in This Folder,' one must first select a particular missing image, and then the program will search for other photos within that folder only. I cannot simply choose the mother folder and have it search for all images.

I wish there was a way to simply to tell ID that the main photo folder has changed.
