Can't open an editable Adobe PDF in InDesign. HELP

I recently call Adobe tech support for a design issue and shared screens with the rep. After that session, I noticed that all my PDFs were being downloaded as Chrome files instead of Adobe files.

I went to Chrome settings and fixed the problem as now files are being downloaded as Adobe PDFs.

HOWEVER

I still can't open these EDITABLE Adobe PDFs in InDesign.

What's the fix?

Thanks

>>Until now, I've been able to import the PDF that was originally created in InDesign and make edits to the design.

The PDF being created in InDesign is not important to this issue.

You CANNOT edit the PDF in InDesign.

You CAN edit the PDF using the following:

  • Acrobat Pro
  • Illustrator (not a recommended workflow)
  • Convert the PDF to InDesign with a plugin, such as Markzware PDFMarkz (this would no longer be a PDF)

All you can do in InDesign is PLACE (not Open) the PDF.

The PDF as Chrome files are probably just a simple file association issue. You need to re-associate the .pdf file format to Acrobat. It's slightly different between Mac and Windows.

I'm confused by your comment of "editable PDFs in InDesign". InDesign can place PDFs but it can't open them or edit them.

The PDF isn't locked. It is able to be edited. The original creator of the
doc has been sharing files with me this way and we haven't had an issue
till now. Until now, I've been able to import the PDF that was originally
created in InDesign and make edits to the design.

I will attempt to "re-associate" the .pdf file format to Acrobat. I am
using Windows.

This does not sound possible.

Are you sure you weren't previously editing your PDFs in Acrobat or Illustrator?

.pdf files are NOT editable from indesign.

You can edit a pdf two ways:

  1. From Acrobat with the edit features
  2. If you have the sourcefiles (ex: indesign file with linked files and associated fonts)

You can use a third party product to open a .pdf in indesign. you will however have embedded images and no styles. Embedded images may not print or display correctly when embedded.

On a nit-pick level (so the OP is clear), having the source files doesn't count as "editing" the PDF.
