Cannot open files in indesign, box opens stating I it was saved with a newer (16.3 version) od indesign, would you like to convert it to an polder version?

Hi there,
Sorry to hear about your trouble. This message occurs because of the way InDesign documents are versioned. It's not possible to open them directly in earlier versions of InDesign without converting them. So you either have to click convert or save the file as IDML to open the document in the previous version of InDesign or update to the latest version of InDesign.
Note: When you click to convert, all the content created using features specific to a particular version of InDesign is sometimes modified or omitted if the document is opened in a previous version. Therefore, carefully review any document opened in an earlier version.

I always clicked on the file icon in the past, it opened fine. Now it says it was saved in a newer version. How do I open in the newer version automatically??

Version 16 is InDesign 2021. You wrote that you had 2020 and 2019, so you have to install the 2021 version.

You have a couple of choices, depending on your preferences...
If you did not intend to have multiple versions of InDesign installed, you can uninstall the older versions. (You can uninstall from the Creative Cloud app.)
If you want to keep older versions, that is totally fine, but only one program can work with a desktop open (double-clicking a file). Often, it is the last installed version, not necessarily the latest version.
