Hi there,

Sorry to hear about your trouble. This message occurs because of the way InDesign documents are versioned. It's not possible to open them directly in earlier versions of InDesign without converting them. So you either have to click convert or save the file as IDML to open the document in the previous version of InDesign or update to the latest version of InDesign.

Note: When you click to convert, all the content created using features specific to a particular version of InDesign is sometimes modified or omitted if the document is opened in a previous version. Therefore, carefully review any document opened in an earlier version.

Regards,

Anshul Saini

Version 16 is InDesign 2021. You wrote that you had 2020 and 2019, so you have to install the 2021 version.

LATEST

You have a couple of choices, depending on your preferences...

If you did not intend to have multiple versions of InDesign installed, you can uninstall the older versions. (You can uninstall from the Creative Cloud app.)

  • Notes: You may want to check your Creative Cloud preferences, under the Apps section (see image below).
  • Also, you may have to relink the ".indd" file extension to the new version after the uninstall if it was linked to an older version.

If you want to keep older versions, that is totally fine, but only one program can work with a desktop open (double-clicking a file). Often, it is the last installed version, not necessarily the latest version.

  • If you want to keep multiple versions, open your desired InDesign version first, then use the Open command from the program.
  • Keep in mind that once a file is opened and saved in a new version, it can't be opened in an older version directly. Save As your files to keep the older versions as a precaution. While you can do a Save As to an IDML file, this brings the file format way back to CS4 (2008) you could lose any newer features used in the file.
