Hello,
I have a master page for most of my pages.
Now I made a new master page with a new layout but pretty much the same text areas.
If I apply this to the pages with the old master page I get both the old and the new text areas.
Is there a way that I can link the text areas of the two masters together so when I change master the text is transferred to the new master?
Hope I have been clear enough with my question. I know I could do this with parent master pages if I had that workflow from the beginning. But since I don't, is there a way to achieve this?

Since you can create a Master based on another Master, I guess you can achieve what you want with a couple of clicks.
Right click on your master
Select the proper Master under the label "Based on"

I mean
Right Click on a Master and select "Options of the Master"
A window appears and then you select your Based-on Master

Actually I tried this, but it did not work. Logically it feels like it should work but it did not.
I removed all text areas fom the new master.
I based the new master on the old master and unlocked and moved the text areas to their correct place.
I applied the new master to the page which had the old master.
Result on the page: The unlocked text fields from the old master was still there and the text fields from the new master were also there.

Can you save the file as a different name and replace with the new Master and delete the old Master page?

Thanks! This is how I ended up solving it!
Not the most beautiful solution, but it works!

You are welcome, we all look for work around from time to time. I am glad it worked.

Generally, this can only happen if you are using a primary text frame.
Once you make modifications to parent/master page objects, including inserting text, InDesign will not remove those modifications when a different master page is applied.
