I'm thinking about switching to Mac M1 but my co-worker doesn't want to upgrade and stays on Intel…

Are indesign files (.indd) created on M1 and indesign files (.indd) created on Mac Intel still 100% compatible? Or are they only compatible by saving them as the .idml filetype?

There is zero difference in any file produced in InDesign from one processor or platform to another.

As long as both of you are using the same version of InDesign and, if applicable, the same add-on extensions, on both platforms, you should have no issues.

If you are using different versions of InDesign, and/or using third-party InDesign extensions on one system and not the other, you have the potential to have file translation problems. You may not, but often that potential conflict is realized sooner than later.

Hope this helps,

Randy

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out. I agree with @Randy Hagan & @BobLevine. Files exported from M1-based mac will work on Intel Macs & Windows-based systems without any issue. If in any rare case, a file doesn't open, you can save it as IDML. But that is very unlikely to happen. I hope it clarifies!

Please feel free to reach out if you run into any other questions or issues in the future. We'd be happy to help.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

My concern would be performance... the M1 version seems very buggy... redraw issues.. elements disappearing ...spinning wheel...
