Creating flippable books

I would like to get the look and feel of a handheld hard-cover book (with pages turning, pop-out graphics etc.). Is there a way to do this with the Adobe suite of products (without using any other third party plug-in)?

Not without a plug-in. Not anymore.

Adobe created that effect through Flash animation long ago. The Flash animation standard has been obsoleted, so Adobe apps don't offer that effect for digital publishing anymore. Though, as you indicate, there are several third-parties who have incorporated such animation through HTML animation and other means. If you want that effect, you're going to have to pick a third-party solution or independent service to apply it to your digital publications.

How are you planning on displaying this? There are plenty of plugins for WordPress that will enable it, but for the life of me, I don't know why you'd want to.

Plug-ins are hard to come by; services that offer flipbooks are not.

Two of the most prominent suppliers are Issuu Flippingbook and, if you're working with WordPress, the DearFlip utility may interest you.
