Creating JPEG with InDesign

I have a problem woth JPEGs I have created through InDesign. When I open them they are black like this.

It seems to be just thoise I have created recently (i.e. 2021). Up to now they ghave been fine, they have suddenly gone black and any new ones I have created in the last couple of days are black from the get-go. Older ones are ok. I'd be grateful if anyone could shed some light.

How do they look in Photoshop or another Photo Editor?

Hi 

In Photoshop they are fine if I re-save them. I haven't looked in anything else. 

It just seems to be those I have exported from InDesign in 2021.

I can't think of anything that would bring this error up.

How do they look when you open the JPEG in photoshop - and resave them?

Do they open ok in Windows Photo Editor?

Hi Marina,

I can see this issue as well.

Windows Photos App is showing the JPEG image for a split second in color and then covers it with black.

My guess:  Your JPEG image is exported in CMYK. That's a four-color-channel image.

Photos is showing a RGB representation and because of the fourth channel in the file it interprets the fourth channel as Alpha channel on top of the RGB representation. With an RGB JPEG image Photos has no issues.

Could be a new issue with Photos.

Could also be that you exported to JPEG in RGB in previous times.

Also tested with previous versions of InDesign. There is no difference to InDesign 2021.

Thanks Uwe. Changing them to RGB has worked.

However, it doesn't explain why JPEGs I created months ago in CMYK have only been going black in the last couple of days. They've been fine up to now.

Probably due to an update to Microsoft application for Photos.

Is there any preferences in Photos? 

I see there is. .heic files extension available throught Photos settings.

It might down to the computers Them - there is an option to use Light mode or Dark mode
- if you switch to Light mode does it resolve?

There is also a hardware acceleration under Videos - does toggling this have any affect?

I've tried the Theme and Video optioons in settings but it makes no difference.

I canlt see Preferences.

Does it happen if you open the JPEG in another image viewer or browser—i.e., Firefox, Chrome, Bridge?

I've tried a few others but it seems to be only Microsoft Photo

Hi Marina,

if you go to "Edit & Create" in Microsoft Photos and do "Edit" the CMYK JPEG image will show as expected.

Save a copy in this state, the copy will be shown as expected. If there is an embedded color profile, the profile cannot be interpreted by e.g. PhotoShop in the copy. It's still a CMYK image, but the CMYK color values are not the same as in the original.
