I'd appreciate help on a problem. I want to cut and paste from a Word document into an indd file.  I gather that all Word formatting is lost. This is good since I want to indd fonts. However, I want to retain text styles - italic and bold. Is there any way to cut and paste that loses Word font and paragraph formatting but retains italics and bolding?

Have you considered placing the file and turning on show import options? You have a lot more control.

Use File > Place instead and enable Show Import Options. Then you are in charge of if InDesign retains or removes the Word formatting.
